For millennia, people have engaged Lent as a time to give up something for God. Atheism for Lent, as popularized by pomo philosopher Peter Rollins, is an invitation to observe it by giving up GOD, in whatever definition we currently assume and base our belief.

There are as many atheisms as there are theisms; all affirmations create their negations. When a belief system is faced with critique, often its reaction is to reject its rejectors. There is an alternative, though, in listening to those who question, and truly considering what they have to say. By pondering perspectives from those who have deliberately chosen to locate themselves outside our tradition, we may be given to see our own blind spots, and refine our own systems of faith.

This Lent, you are invited to expose yourself to some of the most perceptive Western criticisms of God, religion, and faith, posed by figures who offer critiques of instrumentalist, crutch-like, and oppressive systems of belief. Atheism for Lent will provide resources for your reflection, invitation to consider why you have embraced the faith system (theistic, atheistic, or otherwise) that you have, and events to practice welcome and interaction with the "other" - both the focal figures you'll encounter, and people like those around you every day whose social, political, and/or religious views and practices differ from your own. It's an opportunity for each of us to examine ourselves, and open to a deeper, richer, greater understanding of our belief. The goal is to generate an interesting conversation. If it becomes personally transformative, that's okay too.

Events, led by Zihna Gordon, will begin at 7pm and end around 9 pm:

Dear Progressive Muslims,

Muslims for Progressive Values is publishing an anthology on the perspectives and life stories of Muslim progressives living in North America (USA and Canada). We invite you to submit your writings on what being a progressiveMuslim means to you. We are looking for personal, thought-provoking and honest reflections on life as experienced byprogressive Muslims, experiences readers of all backgrounds can connect and relate to.

All too often, progressive Muslim perspectives are ignored, misconstrued, or overshadowed. Now is our chance to reclaim and celebrate our voices...to share ideas and opinions in our own words, on our own terms. Please join us in this powerful and unique opportunity.

We welcome submissions, long or short, on the following topics or any other issues you would like to write about:

- Personal spiritual journey
- Self empowerment/acceptance
- Mixed faith or multicultural parenting and marriages/relationships
- Career path/life goals
- Surviving trauma/violence/abuse
- Evolving perspectives on religion/spirituality/politics
- Contributing to communities (volunteering, activism, etc.)
- Poetry or other forms of self-expression are welcome

There are no minimum or maximum word requirements. However, submissions should not exceed 30 pages.

Writers are not limited to the above-mentioned topics. Please email us if you have any questions at info@mpvusa.org. Previously published work, appropriately credited and cited, will be considered. Our goal is to highlight and share diverse perspectives from people of all genders, ages, sexual orientations, ethnicities, sectarian affiliations, backgrounds, etc. This opportunity is open to those who have identified as a "progressive Muslim" for years before MPV was even founded and for those who are new to the "movement" and are figuring out what being a progressive Muslim means to them.

No previous writing experience is required. However, please edit for spelling and grammar prior to submission. We will work with writers to edit accepted submissions and ensure a cohesive narrative. There is no financial compensation forselected essays. All proceeds from book sales will support Muslims for Progressive Values. Published submissions will become the property of Muslims for Progressive Values.

Community Action - AIF Member Needs Help with Haiti Humanitarian Trip

Haiti Humanitarian Trip - Melissa Robinson

AIF member and co-founder, Melissa Robinson, will be volunteering in Haiti starting near the end of December through the beginning of January. She has been working diligently to raise funds for this effort for several weeks now.

Haiti has suffered a lot this year- a major earthquake in January, Hurricane Tomas just a few weeks ago and the Cholera outbreak. The conditions are unlikely to improve very quickly.

Melissa will be working with patients at the Bernard Mevs hospital.

Please consider donating to this effort. Funds raised will go toward volunteer expenses and purchasing supplies for the hospital. The project is also accepting volunteer supply donations (protein bars, water purification tablets, used scrubs, mosquito nets, etc...).

The deadline for donations is December 20.

AIF will accept donations of supplies at the December 3 and December 17 Discussion Meetings.

This week I will be playing a show from the archive - an interview I did with Daisy Khan, a co-founder, along with her husband Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, of the Cordoba Movement, initiators of the Muslim Community Center project in New York known as Park51. Daisy talks with passion and practicality about her life's mission of creating spaces for Muslims to gather, commune and worship, both here in the U.S. and abroad. She also talks about the need to more closely examine how Muslims lived harmoniously with people of other faiths throughout history to see how we can take lessons from those cultures and apply them to our own.

Domestic Violence Awareness Action - Resources

The American Islamic Fellowship had a Domestic Violence Awareness night.

United 4 Safety led a discussion about domestic violence. U4S uses the term "intimate partner violence" because of the traditional connotations of the word "domestic", which is often seen as limiting in various communities. The discussion also explained the different approaches used when working with heterosexual vs homosexual relationships and the needs for people with different gender expressions and identities.

Ahimsa House was the host of the evening and provided many interested perspectives regarding domestic violence, including the core of the organization's mission, which is to provide services to those who have pets in a domestic violence environment. Often, people do not leave a violent environment because of concern for pets or concern of what will happen to a pet once the environment is left.

There were many questions brought up and answered and several resources that were brought to light. Many organizations, such as United 4 Safety, serve as a resource to connect people to the organizations/people that will help improve a current environment.

Recently, Carlos Museum of Emory University has made a substantial financial commitment and a significant allocation of its precious museum space in bringing a Quranic and calligraphy exhibit to Atlanta. The “Islamic Calligraphy and the Qur'an” exhibit is currently underway and will continue now through December 5.

While the exhibition could be viewed any day of the week during museum operating hours, the museum has designated October 3^rd as 'family day' and a special program is being planned from noon to 4pm.

AIF Discussion Meeting - Transforming Identities

The discussion meeting on Friday addressed the topic of secular/religious paradigms in relation to a country.

The discussion leader, David Ramezani, took participants through a journey of the history of Iran and the sometimes seeming dichotomy between national identity and religion.

There were lots of challenging considerations about the importance of balancing one's religion and national identity and the ability to balance both sides.

A quote by Amina Wadud, speaking to the struggles of France to balance religion and national identity, helps to bring perspective to the conversation:

"I was glad to be in the United States, where the idea of secularism is wedded to the first amendment idea of freedom of religious practice. In France, no such complementary relation between secular and religious freedom exists. Laïcité is the kind of secularism that is anti-religion, anti-religious expression, and anti-religious identity. They are the ones that give secularism such a bad name in most parts of the world that still consider religion a part of identity."

National identity does not have to be abandoned for the sake of religion, but there are many places in the world where there is a black and white approach to the topic. As Americans, there must be consideration of the presence of such environments when discussing multiple identities. When approaching those who have had unfavorable experiences when trying to mix national identity and religion, it is important to use the example of the United States and show how the ability to mix many identities at once is at the core of the Constitution, but also something residents of the U.S. might not readily acknowledge or understand is not necessarily part of all societies.

The conversation was left with many questions still brewing in the minds of participants that will hopefully lead to a continual dialog on the matter.

Dear Friends in Faith,

There is a part in all of us which seems to admire the zeal and fervor that certain people take from sacred altars and we stand in awe at the powerful utterance of certain individuals on matters of faith and conscious. They move tender souls to make tough decisions; stir bashful spirits to take bold action and inspire humble hearts to stand proudly.

Yet, the events of recent days have shown us the potential of extreme perspectives of life and faith to inflame the world to violence more than to inspire the world to peace. Such events have reminded us how just one, single, voice of intolerance can infuriate gentle souls everywhere. We have seen how the hateful attitude and fanatical behavior in certain unfamiliar areas in our country can have brutal repercussions in an equally unfamiliar and well known sections as well, on the other side of the world.

But in the arrogant gesture of such vulgarities, the American Muslim community…and no doubt, other Muslim communities in the world…exhibited a sense of kindness and grace not often extended to them. Whatever feelings you might have felt about such insults to your Holy Book, you stood tall and lived the message of your Ramadan season. It is a testimony to the Muslim communities of our country that, when it could have vented its frustrations….if not its anger…American Muslims took the high road of restraint against the insensitivities of others and of self control against the temptation to retaliate.

On behalf of Interfaith Task Force of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) of Georgia and the many individuals and churches of our Fellowship, I ‘Thank You’ for such a noble display of the spirit of God…however we spell His name. Because of such indignities hurled at you and your sacred writings, building bridges of understanding is needed more today than ever before! Therefore, our Interfaith Task Force will encourage the participants in our Fellowship to seek opportunities to further the cause of respect and tolerance…and even more, to foster acceptance and appreciation of one another.

The most inspirational part of the film was the concert in Pakistan where everyone came together and lived through the music and connected with the music and the spirit of Islam and love behind it.

It's a beautiful, visual representation of the essence of The Taqwacores, the book that spawned this movement.

Gillian Renault from the Vedanta Center of Atlanta came to speak to us. She spoke of both her personal journey to Hinduism and answered questions about general conceptions of Hinduism. She spoke of why she chose to follow the path of Vedanta and gave us a history of the philosophy. We had a discussion about the differences and similarities between contemporary and traditional movements within religions and how many of the contemporary movements look to the origin of a particular religion to find the truth in it without, hopefully, resorting to fundamentalism. We also touched on the development of and sustainability of movements within a religion.

Wow! What a fantastic night! We had a fantastic potluck iftar with lots of yummy food.

We prayed and then settled down for a discussion, led by Camille Townsend and Jeff Straka of the Marietta Emergent Christian Cohort. They played a video by Father Frank Keating, a Benedictine monk, who spoke on philosophical Christianity and an approach the cohorts use to express their faith.

Looking forward to the discussion on Hinduism next Friday with the Vedanta Center of Atlanta.

Unsettled, but Determined

I came home today after listening to the news on the radio and cried. So much so, that my husband said I should refrain from looking at it the rest of the evening. What upset me so? Well, not just one thing, but a combination of things.

WSB Radio started broadcasting in FM today. That, in and of itself, actually made me smile. I enjoy the station and listen to it almost daily. Sean Hannity was on in the afternoon. While not in total agreement with all things Sean Hannity, I do find the show to be amusing, much to many of my more political friends' sometimes puzzled looks. Brigitte Gabriel was a guest on the show. She has been a guest on both the radio and tv show several times. I usually just dismiss her or listen with sympathy about what events must have led her to be so full of hate.

It was the combination of all that shook me. Especially when Gabriel was given the sole voice after the counterpoint for a debate about the "ground zero" mosque left. Why did it upset me so? Well, Sean Hannity, while far from a bastion of constant love, generally stops people from outright vitriol regarding issues. He did not do that this time. Sean Hannity and his listeners, for me, represent my neighbors, my friends and my family. I grew up with people who are conservative in many areas, but not hateful. These are people who were conservative, but would defend someone's rights with every bit of themselves. I no longer see that, but the trouble is, I do not believe people like Sean Hannity can see how the current views being espoused by people like Brigitte Gabriel are poisonous, for society and the United States. WSB Radio is now heard in many more places and today, being the first day the station broadcasted in FM, met audiences with such a narrow view.

It is a scary situation when a person is a bigot, but does not see it. It is even more unnerving when those same people give serious consideration to someone who capitalizes on bigotry.

I wanted to write Mr. Hannity, but at this point, I see little point. I am not generally a defeatist, but I am a pragmatist and see little reason why writing directly to the show would help. So, I am appealing to a wider audience, people who read mainstream news sources. I encourage those reading this to write people like Sean Hannity to help them understand how encouraging people, like Brigette Gabriel, is wrong. While Ms. Gabriel has every right to express herself, it is important a louder, counter voice should move against people like her to soften her voice. Love, not hate, should be the loudest in the cacophony of daily news.

Even if the voices of hate become louder, I do know there is hope. In Atlanta, religious and interfaith groups are mobilizing to show solidarity with each other. For example, the Atlanta Masjid, along with the American Islamic Fellowship, are Emergent Christian Cohorts and other groups, united under the name Allah’s Supper, are sponsoring a dinner to celebrate the meaning of Ramadan to Muslims and the meaning of the Lord’s Supper to Christians. A growing Facebook group is promoting National Don’t Burn a Quran, Read a Quran, Bible, Torah (and other inspirational/religious texts) Day. On a larger scale, is a planned Global Prayer for Peace sponsored by the group Project - Peace on Earth. Such events are a constant and help mobilization against groups that subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, promote views contrary to the spirit of America and humanity.

I will not lose my optimism. I know, in the end, the foundation on which this country was founded will prevail. I may lose myself in the moment, but, to quote Daniel Webster, "We may be tossed upon an ocean where we can see no land -- nor, perhaps, the sun or stars. But there is a chart and a compass for us to study, to consult, and to obey. That chart is the Constitution."

The American Islamic Fellowship Interfaith Music Festival will go on at Coan Park this weekend on Sunday, May 23, 2010 from 2pm to 7pm.

If there is sun, the music and spoken word will be in the ampitheatre area near the park pavillion and the activities will be under the pavillion.

In case of rain, the music and spoken word will be moved to the pavillion and we will have an "unplugged" version of the festival. The food and activities will still be under the pavillion, but may be scaled accordingly.

Remember the $5 donation that will go towards funding this year's event and the festival in the coming years.

The Importance of Freedom of Speech

I have a particular fascination with people with whom I completely don't agree. I can listen to them for hours, watch their shows and work to analyze and understand why they believe the way they do. I do this with a honest intent to see things from another point of view.

I have a strong passion for my own beliefs and this leads me to have a strong passion to defend others' beliefs, whether or not they reflect my own.

I know not all people approach life this way or understand this approach, but I see this as a way to help me understand the utmost importance of the freedom of expression.

Which brings me to South Park. I love South Park. I don't always feel comfortable when I watch South Park, but that's not the point. The point is to watch and understand the underlying message, which sometimes is about how humanity allows certain words and images to dig at them, even when the outlying consequences are minimal.

I have no issue with South Park depicting Muhammed, because that is their interpretation of something. I'm not particularly offended by images of Muhammed or any other prophet, mainly because such things have no meaning to me.

The people from whom Muhammed came were people who worshipped images. It is understandable, then, that in order to help those who chose to begin to worship a different concept of God to whom an image was not ascribed, a tradition developed to prevent depiction of the prophet who brought that particular concept of God to that group of people. Would such a tradition apply to all people for all time...no...because depending on many different aspects of differing groups of people, images might or might not have the same significance.

If having a depiction of a prophet prevents a person from connecting with their spiritual path, then removing those depictions would be important to that individual. However, the expectation for everyone to do the same because of a particular individual is extreme. The individual has the opportunity and power to ignore such an image or, if the individual is worried about others' reactions, could move to present another approach to the subject.

I worry about Comedy Central's decision to censor South Park. I hope there were other, non-public reasons for the decision. I hope the decision was truly not derived from actual fear from violence threatened by RevolutionMuslim.com. Fear, after all, has been the sponsor of too many terrible things and has caused people not to stand up and have a voice when literal lives were on the line...I'm thinking Holocaust proportions here...yes, it has the potential to be that bad.

What's the worse that can happen if we choose to stand up for our beliefs? We could die. That's not an ideal consequence, but for freedom, I know many willing to take that chance, including myself. It's that important...really.

I hope, hope with all my heart, that Americans will continue to remember that the freedoms we enjoy are definitely worth moving through any kind of threats...even those that might be real and might cost lives. The consequence of not defending such freedoms is a shell of a life lived in fear and darkness.

In 1999, she and her husband Elias Amidon, sold their house and began an open-ended pilgrimage of service, teaching and testifying about what they have witnessed around the world in places of conflict.

A Glimpse of Islam in America - Follow-Up

Saturday, AIF hosted "A Glimpse of Islam in America", which was a panel of Muslims representing different facets of Islam in the Atlanta area. Each panelist told a bit about their beliefs and how their beliefs could shape and benefit the communities of which both panelists and participants are a part.

The goals of the panel were:

1. To raise audience awareness (both Muslim and Non-Muslim) of some of the many different expressions of Islam in the United States.
2. To familiarize the audience with some unique characteristics of these expressions of American Islam.
3. To share unique ways these various facets enhance the greater Islamic community as well as the society at large.
4. To demonstrate tolerance, respect, understanding, cooperation and value in the discussion of differences of faith and practice as fellow seekers of God's Mercy and Grace.
5. To spiritually enrich the panelists and audience in the discussion of faith and help us strengthen our faith/ submission to God and to serve our communities in more compassionate and grace-filled ways.

I believe the goals were met and each partcipant walked away with something on which to do and/or ponder.

This, I hope, is just a start to a larger dialogue with and a move towards building bridges both inside and outside the Islamic community.

Charity Navigator has a fantastic guide called Help Survivors of the Earthquate in Haiti that details what to do to help and how. The website also has ratings and guides to help you confidently give to the charitable groups assisting those in need.

Love for Jesus Can Bring Christians, Muslims Together

“Behold! The angels said: ‘O Mary! God giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and in (the company of) those nearest to God.’”

Before searching for this quote in the New Testament, you might first ask your Muslim co-worker, friend or neighbor for a copy of the Quran, Islam’s revealed text. The quote is from verse 45 of chapter 3 in the Quran.

It is well known, particularly in this holiday season, that Christians follow the teachings of Jesus. What is less well understood is that Muslims also love and revere Jesus as one of God's greatest messengers to mankind.

Other verses in the Quran, regarded by Muslims as the direct word of God, state that Jesus was strengthened with the “Holy Spirit” (2:87) and is a "sign for the whole world.” (21:91) His virgin birth was confirmed when Mary is quoted as asking: “How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me?” (3:47)

The Quran shows Jesus speaking from the cradle and, with God’s permission, curing lepers and the blind. (5:110) God also states in the Quran: “We gave (Jesus) the Gospel (Injeel) and put compassion and mercy into the hearts of his followers.” (57:27)

As forces of hate in this country and worldwide try to pull Muslims and Christians apart, we are in desperate need of a unifying force that can bridge the widening gap of interfaith misunderstanding and mistrust. That force could be the message of love, peace and forgiveness taught by Jesus and accepted by followers of both faiths.

Christians and Muslims would do well to consider another verse in the Quran reaffirming God’s eternal message of spiritual unity: “Say ye: ‘We believe in God and the revelation given to us and to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves.’” (2:136)

The Prophet Muhammad himself sought to erase any distinctions between the message he taught and that taught by Jesus, who he called God’s “spirit and word.” Prophet Muhammad said: “Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.”

When Muslims mention the Prophet Muhammad, they always add the phrase “peace be upon him.” Christians may be surprised to learn that the same phrase always follows a Muslim’s mention of Jesus or that we believe Jesus will return to earth in the last days before the final judgment. Disrespect toward Jesus, as we have seen all too often in our society, is very offensive to Muslims.

Unfortunately, violent events and hate-filled rhetoric around the world provide ample opportunity for promoting religious hostility. And yes, Muslims and Christians do have some differing perspectives on Jesus’ life and teachings. But his spiritual legacy offers an alternative opportunity for people of faith to recognize their shared religious heritage.

America’s Muslim community stands ready to honor that legacy by building bridges of interfaith understanding and challenging those who would divide our nation along religious or ethnic lines.

We have more in common than we think.

It's strange, but if put on the spot, many people seem to have a problem figuring out things for which they are thankful. Picture AIF's Thanksgiving/Eid dinner last Friday. We had a nice group of people and we decided to go around and tell a story that reflected thanks. Most of the people groaned and claimed they couldn't think of anything. However, as the conversation went on, everyone eventually discovered that their story came out very easily.

When I was going through a very difficult situation in my life, I used to have to force myself to think of five things for which I was thankful EVERY DAY. I had plenty to be thankful for, but was very caught up in my moment and pity for myself, so those wonderful things were seemingly few and far between. As I got into the habit more and more, I was able to find things to be thankful for all around me! I went from being a very negative drama queen to a much more positive, 'slightly less drama' queen. Perfection isn't my goal, but learning to see the good in the bleakest situation is.

When I find myself back in a situation where the things to be thankful for are once again pushed out of my line of vision, I look to inspiration to bring me back around to reality. One key tool is the Internet. Since I'm on the computer for a good chunk of my week, one of the easiest things to do is simply type in 'thankful' or some similar search term into my browser. One of my favorite sites, wikiHow, has a short, but nice guide on How to Be Thankful.

It's appropriate that Eid Al-Adha and Thanksgiving fall around the same time this year. Both holidays focus on giving thanks. As you celebrate one or both of these 'thanks-centered' holidays, remember to find something in your everyday to be thankful for, so you can have a thankful heart all year 'round.

What Can I Do? - Veterans Day

Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the armed forces - in wartime or peacetime - in any capacity. The day is on November 11 to commemorate the end of World War I. The armistice that ended World War I was signed at 11am on November 11.

How can you honor those who have helped to uphold our values and freedoms?

Visit the U.S. Department of Veterans website. From the website, you can find a wealth of resources, including programs, veteran organizations and even a kids page.
Volunteer with Veterans through the Department of Veterans. The Department will match you based on your location and preference - http://www.volunteer.va.gov/apps/VolunteerNow/.
Call friends and family who are veterans. You probably know someone who is a veteran. Talk to your friends and family to find out who they may be and simply say, "Thanks!"
Email or send a letter to a veteran. Online sites, such as American Greetings, have thank you e-cards specifically for for veterans.
Visit a museum with veteran volunteers and/or geared towards veterans. In Atlanta, the National Museum of Patriotism is staffed by many veterans. In Chattanooga, the National Medal of Honor Museum has volunteers who are veterans and Medal of Honor winners.
Treat a veteran to a day out on the town. Many companies offer freebies and discounts to veterans on Veterans Day. Here is a list for the Atlanta area.
Observe a moment of silence. Traditionally, a moment of silence is observed in many communities at 11am on November 11.
Make a donation to the American Legion and/or the Veterans of Foreign Wars. On Veterans Day, these groups sell red, paper poppies made by disabled veterans. The poppies symbolize the memory of those armed forces lost in the line of duty. Proceeds from the sales of the poppies go to programs specifically for veterans.

It only takes a moment, if a moment is all you have, to celebrate Veterans Day!

Organizations encourage education and community involvement

ATLANTA, GA; LOS ANGELES, CA - November 6, 2009 - The American Islamic Fellowship and Muslims for Progressive Values united on Friday in voicing their concern and condemnation of the shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. The organizations send prayers and love to those affected by the shooting.

While the religion of the alleged shooter, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, has not been confirmed, his names are often associated with practictioners of Islam. Thoughtless and groundless violence cannot ever be justified by any religious or personal beliefs and actions such as the shocking events in Fort Hood go against Islamic teachings of love and respect for life.

AIF and MPV expressly encourage people to continually educate themselves about conditions that contribute to such tragedies and to work with those organizations, like AIF and MPV, who strive to help eradicate society violence through continuous community involvement and violence prevention awareness.

Who Inspires You?

In our discussion this week, we are going to look at inspirational people of faith. As we come to this topic, think about those people who have inspired you through their words, their deeds or in other ways. Is the person someone you know personally? Is the person an historical figure? Has the person inspired you to act intentionally or unintentionally? Is the person of the same faith or of a different faith or philosophy?

I can think of many people who have inspired me in my life. The members of my family are a group of people who have inspired me, sometimes intentionally and sometimes unintentionally. My family continually positively challenges my faith by helping me further seek what it is that has brought me to this path on which I am.

My family is not the only group of people who have positively challenged me lately. I have been taking part in interfaith discussions with Christians through Understanding Islam sessions sponsored by a local church. The purpose of these discussions is to learn about Islam and learn about ways that Christians and Muslims can stay strong in each respective faith, but also learn how to build bridges with one another. The people in these sessions have made me really stop to think about why I am Muslim, what makes me a Muslim, how my beliefs are different from other religions/philosophies and how my beliefs are the same. I have enjoyed each discussion and look forward to developing lasting relationships with the people I meet.

I believe some of the most inspiring people of faith in my life are those who may not always agree with how I approach my spiritual path. I constantly look for ways I can ask God to "increase my knowledge" and believe this is absolutely done through these relationships.

Investing in People

Think back to the last time you were able to share a real conversation, of depth, with someone. Not the baseless trivial pleasantries we use, ad nasuem, to maintain relationships at bare minimum and, seemingly, make you dumber in the end. The kind you have with someone who shares, emphatically, the same ideologies as you, or deeply opposes them. It doesn't matter, either way, because something is ignited that hasn't been in a while. And all the while during this lengthy, tutelage descending discourse, you've managed to abandon 5 incoming calls and a hamburger patty left on the burner for close to two hours. That's the good stuff.

I was able to connect, in this way, with one of AIF's active fellows, Shahidah. We talked about everything from how people are desensitized by the news, which stemmed from a story in the news, to work and family woes. The article, in particular, was about a Saudi woman who was imprisoned for 9 months, along with her two children, for refusing to leave her husband after her half-brothers petitioned for her divorce.

Not satisfied as only a topic of conversation, Shahidah also detailed how I could take a more active role, as will I do for you. But this week, go the extra mile and give a piece of yourself to someone else. Invest in people because sometimes the greatest impact may be preceded by one phone call...or fax.

Georgia State University Professor Resigns over Bomb” Comments to Muslim-American Student

Atlanta, Georgia - July 1, 2009 - The Director of the Middle East Institute at Georgia State University, Dona J. Stewart, has resigned citing the university’s failure to address incidents of anti-Muslim bias.In August 2008 a Muslim-American doctoral student, Ms. Slma Shelbayah, was repeatedly asked by a senior faculty member, Dr. Mary Stuckey, if she was ‘carrying any bombs’ underneath her Islamic headscarf, or hijab.

Ms Shelbayah was also employed as a Visiting Instructor of Arabic in the Middle East Institute. She holds Bachelor and Masters degrees from Georgia State University.Dr. Stewart’s resignation cited retaliatory actions taken by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Lauren Adamson, following Ms. Shelbayah’s request that the incidents cease. The dean’s office demanded that Dr. Stewart remove Ms. Shelbayah from her visiting instructor position, cancelled Ms. Shelbayah’s registration for her doctoral courses, and declared Ms. Shelbayah ineligible to lead a study abroad program to Egypt previously approved by the president of the university.

Dr. Stewart refused to meet the dean’s demands, believing they violated Ms. Shelbayah’s constitutional rights and lacked due process. Dr. Stewart was subjected to numerous hostile comments and retaliatory actions by the dean that has impaired her ability to fulfill federal grant commitments and harmed her career.No disciplinary action was taken towards the senior faculty member.

The EEOC is currently investigating formal complaints filed by Stewart and Shelbayah.Dona Stewart is a former Fulbright scholar to Jordan and author of The Middle East Today: Political, Geographical and Cultural Perspectives. In 2006 she received GSU’s Exceptional Service Award and is the 2009 faculty recipient of the Sparks Award that recognizes GSU’s ‘unsung heroes’. She has led the Middle East Institute since 2002.

Holocaust Museum Shooting

The American Islamic Fellowship is shocked and saddened by the shooting today at the National Holocaust Museum by a suspected white supremacist. Our prayers are with the family of the museum guard whose life was taken. The Council on American-Islamic Relations also released a statement: "We condemn this apparent bias-motivated attack and stand with the Jewish community and with Americans of all faiths in repudiating the kind of hatred and intolerance that can lead to such disturbing incidents."

Discussion Meeting June 5th: "Honoring Fathers"

I really enjoyed this meeting! We had several new faces who contributed a lot to the conversation. I felt that some of the insights into life stages in different cultures contributed to my understanding of how various people cope with and view the process of aging. We did wander off topic some but the side-discussions were also inspiring and faith-affirming for me.

I really enjoyed sharing a song by Peter Mayer, "Holy Now" that my dad shared with me that has influenced my faith and spirituality for many years. It was appropriate that we had the music festival the weekend before and that it was through music that my father really touched my spirit and inspired me to pursue my own faith and understanding of God. We share a bond through that and other songs that is very important to me so that whenever I hear them I think of him and am inspired to focus my energies on the things that are really important in my life- my faith and my family.

Statement about the NYC Bomb Plot by Muslims for Progressive Values

We unequivocally condemn this and all such violent acts as inherently un-Islamic, and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of the Jewish faith and all peace-loving Americans. Dear friends,

I'm sitting in Cairo now as I write this letter, at the home of relatives with whom I was reunited yesterday after nearly a decade of separation. I went to sleep last night with a feeling of peace that I haven't felt in a long time and woke early this morning to the sound of the Azhan, the Islamic call to prayer, as it sung its way across the neighborhood and through the open window over my bed.

But as I was sharing hugs with my Muslim family here in Egypt, four very disturbed Muslim men were planting bombs in an effort to tear apart Jewish families in New York. Early news reports suggest that these men were "upset about the war in Afghanistan," so with a deranged rationale of misanthropic nihilism they somehow concluded that planting bombs in front of two Bronx synagogues and recreating the atmosphere of bloodshed, fear, and loss we experienced during and after 9/11 would provide some personal cathartic release.

I want my friends in the New York Jewish community to know how deeply I sympathize with the emotional anguish that is sure to pervade in the wake of this failed plot. While we're all concerned for the well-being of our families in this period of economic insecurity, none of us should carry the additional burden of being potential targets of violent acts of hate and terror. You have no idea how relieved I am that you are all safe from the will of these would-be terrorists and how concerned I am for your (and our collective) ongoing health and safety.

In all honesty, it is times like these that I wish Islam had some mechanism for excommunication. I wish that my non-Muslim friends and acquaintances would see me, my family, my Muslim friends, and the American Muslim community as representative of Islam rather than the headline-grabbing sociopaths who act in our name. I'm so sick of finding myself ashamed of something I didn't do, by someone I do not know, with motives I do not share, against people for whom I care.

Please know that you are not alone in the shock of this news... that good everyday people whom you have never met, and will likely never meet, as far away as Egypt are also distressed by this story. My thoughts and their thoughts are with you. My prayers and their prayers are for you.

Patriarchal Religion?

When judging whether or not an act has a justifiable religious motivation, it is imperative to understand that religion. In the case of Islam, it is imperative that one read and understand the Qur'an,our holy book. It is not acceptable to judge the actions of groups of people (no matter how large the group is) and say "this is sanctioned by the religion". No reasonable person would claim that bombing an abortion clinic is sanctioned by Christianity or that it is a part of Jesus' message because there is no justification found in the Gospels and New Testament. Likewise, there is NO Qur’anic justification for honor killings or revenge killings; please check this out yourself and if I am wrong show me the surah (passage) in the Qur’an that contradicts me.

So, it is quite true that this beheading had nothing to do with Islam or the Muslim religion. The Qur'an, as the word of God transmitted through Mohamed to the people of Arabia, was quite progressive on women's rights: such as granting women the right to marry only men of their choice and the right to divorce a bad or incompatible husband. Any government that prevents a woman from exercising these rights is therefore un-Islamic, even if the country is majority-Muslim. Government/legal sanction does not indicate religious sanction. By keeping silent or allowing these anti-Islamic laws to persist in countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran etc, the Sheikhs, Imams and Ayatollahs are going against God's laws which are quite clear in the Qur'an. This is important because in the Buffalo case, the suspected motive for the accused husband was that his wife wanted a divorce and, in America, she has the right to initiate these proceedings. So current American law follows the Qur’an; but current law in the couple’s native Pakistan, does not. So when Susan Jacoby states: “Until the separation of church and state began to take hold in the West (slowly and unevenly) after the Enlightenment, there was really very little difference between the way women were dealt with under traditional Christian teaching and the laws of nation states. In countries where there is no separation of church and state, including many Islamic theocracies, there are still no "women's rights" that violate traditional Islamic law” she clearly is misunderstanding that although there may be no clear ‘separation of church and state’ in a particular government, this does not lead to the conclusion that all laws of such a government are sanctioned by the majority religion of the people. Islam gives women rights that their governments have taken away. In addition, religious leaders who are governmental appointees or who are in service to a government have a dual allegiance to God and that government. How do we know who they are speaking for when they make a religious pronouncement? Separation of church and state protects the religion by keeping it free of the state’s influence as much as it protects the people from subjection by a religion contrary to their own beliefs.

Does the Qur'an allow killing? The only justifiable homicide is to protect yourself from an attacker who is intent on killing you and/or your defenseless family and this is only in the case of imminent danger, not pre-emptive homicide due to fear that someone might kill you or yours. The Qur'an is quite clear on this. Why is the Qur'an clear on this? Because honor killings and revenge killings and other violent crimes of passion were part of the human condition in pre-Islamic Arabia. In fact, these types of killings are part of the general human condition in the modern Western world in societal groups operating under tribal patterns: (1) street gangs in inner city America from a variety of cultural/ethnic backgrounds including those of Anglo/European descent (Caucasians), (2) the so-called Mafia including non-Italian groups in North America and Eurasia, (3) drug cartels operating in the Americas and elsewhere, to name a few.

In Mohamed's time women converted to Islam in great numbers because conditions for a Muslim woman and an Islamic marriage were overwhelmingly better for her and her children. Muslim women owned their own property, were educated to read and write, ran businesses and kept control of their own money (all delineated in the Qur'an) over a thousand years before these rights were conferred on Western women in recent times. Under Islam a women is NEVER considered anyone's property and her religious destiny is her own responsibility. Again, some governments in majority Muslim countries have taken some or all of these rights away from women.

So there are cultural problems in the Islamic world and it is a travesty that Islamic rights have been taken away from women in many majority-Muslim countries since these rights are divinely mandated. The true problem is ignorance. In addition to the marriage/divorce rights I mentioned above, it is also stated in the Qur’an that there is ‘no coercion/compulsion in religion’. Not only does this mean that a Muslim cannot coerce another person into becoming Muslim, it also means that a Muslim cannot compel a fellow Muslim (including their own wife or husband) to follow what they believe to be true Islam. Each individual is personally responsible for their own salvation. It is incumbent upon each Muslim to read and understand the Qur’an and follow their conscience. Quoting from Jacoby’s article: “Mrs. Hassan use to wear the traditional hijab covering her hair, but later abandoned the custom.” The implication is that Mr. Hassan objected; as Jacoby further states: “It is certainly possible that this case involved a conflict between the culture into which both members of the couple were born and the culture in which they lived in the United States--specifically, a clash between the role of women in American society and in majority Islamic countries.” Unless he tells us, we can only guess what was in Mr. Hassan’s head; a fact that Jacoby, herself, asserts later in the article. Whether or not Mr. Hassan objected to the way in which his wife practiced Islam does not tell us anything about the practice of Islam. As I stated above, Mrs. Hassan is responsible for her own salvation under Islam; it is not Mr. Hassan’s responsibility.

So when Jacoby concludes her article with “But the comments of Muslim authorities saying this crime has nothing … to do with religion …certainly do not address urgent issues about the position of women within some quarters of Islam or the uneasy position of many immigrant women and girls caught between the most traditional, repressive Muslim religious values and the secular liberties that the United States affords its female citizens” she is condemning Muslim religious values when she should be condemning the cultural values of these immigrants. Jacoby perpetuates the misunderstanding of Islam as being indistinguishable from the cultural practices of people who happen to be Muslim when in fact Islam and these cultures are separate and distinct. Why does Jacoby dismiss “the mainstream Muslim leaders who were quick to say that this murder has nothing to do with "real" Islam”? They were absolutely correct! No religious leader, whether they are Christian, Jewish or Muslim, wants to admit that domestic violence occurs within their congregation; however, it is important that our religious leaders are not silent about the problem within their own communities. Domestic violence, abuse and murder are not sanctioned by the holy books of these religions, no matter how many members commit these crimes; fortunately we are talking about a minority of members. So it was imperative that the “mainstream Muslim leaders” denounce this crime and it is equally imperative that action is taken by our religious leadership to prevent future crimes like this one to the fullest extent possible.

So absolutely, Muzzamil Hassan, was guilty of extreme domestic violence when he beheaded his wife, Aasiya Hassan. I believe this was about control: she was exercising her God-given and state-sanctioned right to divorce her husband and he permanently stopped her or punished her (I/we can't know his true motivation). There is no justification for his actions within the Qur’an and it is irresponsible journalism to suggest that his actions were religiously motivated and perpetuate the stereotype of the violent Muslim male operating under the sanction of Islam. Practicing Muslims pray for peace five times a day. We don’t know what was in Mr. Hassan’s head, but we do know that there was, is and never will be an Islamic justification for this atrocity.

Discussion Topic: Why Religious Liberty?

Talking about religious liberty can be a pain point for some. Liberty for all not only includes accepting those who want to become part of your religious/philisophical group, but also accepting that some may not want to become a part of your group and may even leave your group if they are currently a part of it.

Our discussion, inspired by an earlier speech about Why Islam and Democracy by Dr. Abdullahi An-na'im, focused on participants' experiences with religious liberty. Religious liberty from several religious perspectives were addressed, as was the fear some groups have of allowing others to talk about varying or different beliefs to their communities. The concept of an "unbeliever" was talked about and how various holy books and philosophical groups define and approach those who are consider outside a particular belief. Several participants had experienced varying degrees of religious liberty and even lived in situations where opposing religious views from the "norm" were punishable by death.

We also discussed how one can be true to one's own beliefs while still allowing for religious liberty. The importance of allowing disbelief in order to allow a person to understand belief in something was also addressed. Keith Ellison, a U.S. Congressman, Muslim and proponent of religious liberty, was discussed and this led to the group talking about belief and living within the standards setup by the U.S. Constitution.

In the end, this lively discussion yielded many points of view and how lucky the participants felt to be part of something where concepts such as liberty, belief and unbelief could be addressed without fear or coercion.

An Interfaith Experiment

I attended a meeting of "Interfaith Leaders" tonight at the Al-Farooq Masjid (14th St. Mosque) in downtown Atlanta. I know and respect several of the organizers of this event and so, though I had serious (and valid) reservations about the selected location, I felt it was important that I attend. I am glad I did but I did not escape unscathed...

The speaker, Leland Russell gave a thought-provoking presentation about the importance of Interfaith Efforts on a Global scale. Kemal Korucu of the Instanbul Center commented that the interfaith movement being exhibited by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia during last Summer's conference and Tony Blair's Faith Foundation and others are examples of the "leaders catching up with the people;" that the people have been doing interfaith work for a long time and it is just now being given importance by government and those in power. He also commented that these issues are "too important to leave up to political leaders; they'll just mess it up."

It occurred to me that the truly good, powerful and influential movements in history; the Renaissance, the American Revolution, the Civil Rights Movement, Abolition... have all begun with the people. Ben Johnson made the assessment that "if this is a God-given movment, nothing can stop it." There was the general sentiment that our efforts were in fact, being influenced and guided by God. Kemal made two other comments which I found most insightful; that we are working toward "Unity, not Uniformity" and that the reason interfaith work fails-per Dr. Johnson is "Because we don't focus on God." Another gentleman, whose name I did not get, mentioned the importance of emotional maturity when it comes to interfaith work. I had had discussions about this particular topic with Dr. Godlas some months ago.

Of note was the fact that violence has been declining all over the globe and that we may be living in the "most peaceful time in our species existence." Why doesn't it feel that way?

We discussed the need for "Think and Do Networks" and "Cross-Boundary Leadership." We split into small groups to discuss questions exploring where there are examples of successful networks, what is missing in Atlanta, and obstacles to collaboration.

In our small group we discussed the existing networks; Interfaith Disabilities Network, Interfaith Network to Combat AIDS, Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta, and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Other important and successful networks are the American Jewish Committee, Habitat for Humanity, and various Affordable Housing organizations. We determined that we needed greater awareness across the communities, greater collaboration, and to expand what is already occurring.

After we reconvened, we discussed what each of the small groups came up with. There were a lot of productive insights. There was also a lot of talk of the importance of "Doing" vs "Talking." Ironically, we left the 4 hour meeting having done nothing but a lot of talking... In this, I was quite disappointed, and may have brought up this fact if I had not been distracted by an incident that occured during our refreshment break...

Al-Farooq segregates men and women- one of the primary reasons I am uncomfortable going there. I find it quite offensive to be cloistered in a side-room on in a balcony behind glass and lattice-work, no matter how beautifully designed. However, I was attending an important interfaith meeting with both men and women and hoped that this issue would not raise its ugly head.

I had just begun to feel at ease- was even beginning to question my previous aversion to the place somewhat, when I received a wake-up call from an employee of the Mosque...

I had brought two women friends with me- one Muslim and one Adventist. We took our delicious samosas, strawberries, cookies, dates, and coffee into the hallway. Our hands full and the hall getting even more crowded we spotted the marble stairs we had come down. We sat down to share our thoughts about the discussion and enjoy our snack. We were deep in conversation about the various levels of interfaith work that need to occur, what role the community leaders play and the role of emotional intelligence and maturity needed for certain interfaith efforts- that God must be the focus, not the tiny details, but the big picture and what kinds of "doing" make a better world... when we were interrupted.

A man came down the stairs and began berating us for sitting on the "men's side" of the mosque. He was becoming increasingly aggressive with us. We calmly explained to him that we were guests of the masjid, that we were having a meeting and were not allowed to bring our food into the meeting room and there were not chairs available to us so we were sitting on the stairs. He was adamant that we should move, that very instant, that somehow, our being there was encroaching on the men's territory. His body language became a visible force as he walked into our space, where we were sitting and his voice rose. We explained that we only had a few minutes left and would be going back into the meeting room and would finish eating and leave, but he was not satisfied. As we made our way back to the hall to throw our plates and cups he followed us, continuing to reprimand us, trying to force us, with his body, into the cramped hallway leading to the meeting room.

I don't believe he would have left us alone if it had not been for the larger group we were joining. I could help but think that if it had been one of the Christian, Hindu or Jewish guests being accosted how put-off with the mosque and, by association, Islam, they would be. What did my Adventist friend think? At that point would they even be interested in continuing the interfaith conversation? Upon our return when we began to discuss the need for "safe, peaceful environments" for the interfaith conversation I couldn't help but note the irony as my blood boiled and my hands shook. My friend Heidi commented, "I think I'm more of a feminist than I gave myself credit for..." as she tried to keep the coffee from spashing out of her shaking cup.

I tried to shake off the incident, his chauvanistic attitude, ignorance and poor manners in order to be a productive participant, but it was not easy and I know I was not as "with it" as I usually am.

While I still feel it was important that I was there I will think long and hard before I ever step foot in that mosque again.

Not In Our Name - Not in anyone's name

I was riding in a car with four people after the Not In Our Name event...

I was excited because the Not In Our Name event had gone so well. The crowd was bigger this year and the energy during the event was greater. Each speaker had brought strength to the movement to work towards eliminating (yes, really) domestic violence. It was something each speaker and participant believed was possible and it was conveyed through the hopeful to the heart-wrenching words spoken.

Not every one of the speakers had personally experienced domestic violence, but they had experienced what domestic violence does. Whether or not a person realizes it, everyone is affected by this malady, whether they want to be or not. The effect could be personal, mental, through the community, economical, etc... Domestic violence is something that, unfortunately, pervades every aspect of the world. The purpose of the event was to educate everyone, but also to move people to action, in some capacity.

Ayonna Johnson, from the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, spoke of how one could take action through the community and legally. She spoke of many women who were in domestic violence situations, but who had fallen into legal battles as a result. This legal aspect really touched a few participants, with one mentioning "how important it was to remind people that there are legal steps to take and ways to use the processes already in place to make a difference. That's how easy it is."

Dr. Sue Boardman related how she had moved through her own personal struggles with domestic violence to seminary. She spoke of how her experiences helped her when she was fresh out of seminary and how she drew on them to help with awareness in the community she was serving. She was able to educate people and even found a place, Hannah's House, as a refuge for those experiencing domestic violence. Dr. Boardman gave a great example through herself of someone who was not only educated, but a clergy person. Her message was that anyone, no matter the status in life, could work to help eradicate domestic violence. She also conveyed how even humor can be a healing part of the process.

Tzipporah Gerson spoke about the importance of rituals and other familiar things can be an outlet for growing past domestic violence and breaking the cycle. She emphasized how some people who are from various communities, can use the practices of the community to help, even those practices that may not readily seem like they might. She specifically mentioned several Jewish traditions, not necessarily used in situations of domestic violence, but used in situations of healing, growth and renewal that were fantastic ways people of the Jewish community could work through domestic violence. She encouraged each participant to find healing and ways to act against domestic violence through our own personal rituals and practices, regardless of one's philosophy. She also shared the importance of many different communities being involved in the struggle against domestic violence, so he many types of victims had a comfortable place to heal.

Mona Eltahawy shared her own personal story of domestic violence. Her story was different than the physical violence many people think of when domestic violence is mentioned. Hers was a struggle with mental and emotional abuse. She was able to relate to many in the room who had similar experiences. She also spoke of an international movement, Musawah, which works for equality in Muslim families, but also conveys a message of the need for equality and respect in all families. Mona played a video from a conference she had attended in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the organization. She also played two videos from a campaign in India called, Ring the Bell. The campaign showed how even a small act could help break the cycle of violence, even if it was just for a moment, it might be the moment that made a difference. The videos greatly inspired the audience and showed again how easy it was to move to action.

I was riding in a car with four people after the Not In Our Name event. ALL of us had experienced domestic violence in some capacity. We also conveyed stories from others, both men and women, who had also experienced domestic violence in many capacities. With the sobering realization that statistics say 1 in 4 women worldwide experience domestic violence(1), we understood the affect and reach of domestic violence was greater than the statistics, at least in our experience. Much more will need to be done about domestic violence and, if the response from Not In Our Name is any indicator, it will.

AIF Speaker Series - Why Islam and Democracy?

AIF was blessed to have Dr. Abdullahi An-Na'im join us as part of the AIF Speaker Series.

I learned a lot from the brief two hours we spent in discussion.

Democracy, according to Webster's Dictionary is "a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections."

Islam, Dr. An-Na'im stated, is "radically democratic" because religious authority lies with the individual, not with a higher entity. A muslim defines what it means to be muslim for him or herself. "Every Muslim," he said, "is responsible for every choice or failure to choose." We have an inescapable responsibility to ourselves and one another.

There was discussion about the terms "State" "Religion" "Politics" and the "Church." When Dr. An-Na'im said there is no "Church" in Islam- he did not mean the term 'church,' he meant, there is no high authority- because of Islam's inherent individualism.

Contrary to common perception, in the history of Islam there was no unification of religion and the State- the Caliph was a political leader but not a religious authority. The governing bodies and princes did work collaboratively with the scholars but did not seek to co-opt their positions. Politics, he said, are always influenced by faith. Our morals and values will be reflected in the laws of the land due to democratic rule of the people.

When I was studying the Italian women's movement a few years ago, one of the slogans, "The Personal is Political" carried the momentum. I thought about that during this discussion. Our personal choices, which are influenced by our faith, are political, in that we do what we feel is best for ourselves and our communities.

What Can I Do? - Not In Our Name - Interfaith Domestic Violence Awareness Event

On March 14, 2009, the American Islamic Fellowship in Atlanta, GA will host the SecondAnnual Faith-Based Domestic Violence Awareness Event. This event is designed to emphasize thatpeople of all faiths unconditionally condemn abuse and violence of all kinds. This event aims to highlightintercultural and interfaith efforts to bring an end to this social problem that transcends faith, racial,ethnic, class, and gender boundaries. Speakers at the event will share different faith and culturalperspectives in a united denunciation of Domestic Violence. This event aims to address the severity ofdomestic violence, to initiate partnerships and to network between various organizations and faithcommunities, as well as to highlight resources available to those in need.

The event will call communities and organizations to action, as confronting and defeatingdomestic violence is a collective and complex problem. The event will partner with representatives fromvarious local and national domestic violence organizations to provide information and support regardingtheir respective efforts. The organizers of this Second Annual Faith-Based Domestic Violence AwarenessEvent aspire to assist in expanding and promoting awareness about the resources available tothose affected by Domestic Violence. Through sustained efforts and cooperation across communities,cultures and geographic regions, we hope to maintain the networks and partnerships achieved inorganizing this event to work together year-round in combating the causes and repercussions of domesticviolence throughout the world.

In Atlanta, the American Islamic Fellowship will host this event on March 14, 2008. The eventwill take place at Emory University’s White Hall Room 208 from 7:00pm-9:00pm, featuringnetworking and light refreshments. Speakers will include Mona Eltahawy, an award-winning syndicatedcolumnist and an international public speaker on Arab and Muslim issues, Ayonna Johnson of theWomen's Resource Center for Domestic Violence, Tzipporah Gerson, a volunteer with the Shalom Bayitprogram of the Jewish and Family Career Services in Atlanta, and Dr. Sue Boardman, an ordainedminister in the Presbyterian Church, a partner in ChangeWorksAtlanta, and a founding director ofHannah's House, a Domestic Violence shelter program. Music will be performed by Kerry Wentworth.The event aims to attract representatives from many faith traditions.

Ashes to Ashes

When my friend asked me to go to and Ash Wednesday service with her, I jumped at the chance. My friend is Catholic and I had never been to an actual service in a Catholic Church. I'd only sat through a couple funerals, which apparently were Vatican I because they were mostly in Latin. I had been to several Ash Wednesday services in my life, but mostly at Episcopal or Methodist Churches. Always looking for a new adventure.

On the way, my friend and I discussed what we were giving up for Lent, a Christian season of fasting and prayer I think of as a "Ramadan light". She had not decided anything yet. I had a clear choice, fast food. I had discussed this intent with both my mother and sisters just the night before that. Usually when it comes to Lent, the thing I am giving up blasts out like a cannon in front of me. This year was no different.

I walked into the cavernous sanctuary and the place was incredibly packed. I never remember the day being this popular. Nice to think about all the others who are sacrificing along with me. I observed the service and saw how close it was to the ones I'd already experienced and how close the words spoke were to the intentions I'd heard many times during Ramadan. The priest came around to put ashes on foreheads and before I could react, he put them on my head as well. He spoke the words of Mark 1:15 as he put the ashes on, "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel." I immediately took in these words and thought of the part of the Qur'an which it talks about the Gospel and how it is a guide. I smiled knowing my own secret in the room in which I stood and how much I hope I would live these words as I had the ashes put on my head.

As the service went on, I was able to contemplate my own beliefs, internalize prayers as others were spoke and connect with the reason why others, even though they have other practices, were part of a very similar journey. I also thought of my grandfather, who was a Catholic, and felt like I was holding his hand through a shared experience.

The ashes are taken from the palms of the previous year's Palm Sunday. The palms represent the high honor given to Jesus as he entered Jerusalem. Wearing those ashes help me honor a man I considered to be a fabulous teacher. Here, I was able to learn through a journey he had taken.

Sacrifice and remembrance are two things I bring with me through Lent. I celebrate it as a way to connect to my friends and family, but also because, like Ramadan, it helps me remember those who have no choice but to sacrifice a lot.

What Can I Do? Aasiya Zubair Hassan's Death

The American Islamic Fellowship was saddened and dismayed to hear of the death of Aasiya Zubair Hassan. Ms. Hassan worked hard to build bridges among the many different cultures of the world and was very respected by our community. AIF was also saddened to hear her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, has been charged in her murder. AIF Advisor, Asra Nomani writes about the family's struggles; "Deadly Family Secrets."

The AIF condemns all acts of violence irrespective of who is involved and what the impetus may have been. Domestic violence is a widespread problem that crosses all cultures, faiths, communities, races, and ethnic groups.On March 14, 2009, AIF is sponsoring the 2nd Annual "Not In Our Name: United Against Domestic Violence" (NION). NION is an inter and intra-faith effort to educate the public about this particularly difficult societal struggle. NION hopes to move participants to action and bring together diverse voices from many faith traditions to show solidarity toward bringing an end to all kinds of violence. Mona Eltahawy, an award-winning international journalist will be speaking at the event and addresses the issue of domestic violence in Islam surrounding Ms. Hassan's death in her article, "The Sister We Missed."

Many voices from within the Islamic community are speaking out against this terrible tragedy including the Islamic Society of North America who issued this statement. The SBIA San Jose Masjid has begun the initiative, "Imams Speak Out: Domestic Violence Will Not Be Tolerated in Our Communities" in an effort to spur Imams and communities to discuss this problem at Friday services. Spiritual Journeys

Where have we come from and where are we now was the theme from the discussion about Spiritual Journeys at our recent meeting. Dr. Ben Johnson led each participant on a journey through the past. We started at our birth days and let significant events come to us through a relaxing exercise rather than through forceful thinking. We then looked at these events, made them a chapter in our stories and named each one. Then, we discussed how the events and the exercise made us feel rather than discuss the particular instances in our lives.

The trials of a puppy-mom

My husband and I adopted a puppy 2 months ago. Mercedes was already 6 months old but completely uninhibited. She had been at the Atlanta Humane Society for 3 months before she came to live with us. She was actually returned to the shelter once before. Our suspicion was that her previous adopted family hadn't spent the time needed to train her. Which is A LOT!!!

Mercedes is my husband's very first dog- ever. It was an interesting progression, really. He had always been a "no dog" policy man. That was, until we bought a house- that had a yard. Over the next few months he started whispering into my ear at night. "You want a dog.... The back yard is empty... what do you want to name your puppy?.... can't you hear her whimpering?..." Eventually, the subliminal messages caused their desired effect. I caved. He knows me- he knew that once I was sold on the idea I would proceed to research every last detail... I haunted http://www.petfinder.com/ and online dated more than one puppy before we ever visited a shelter. I researched every breed known to man to figure out which one would be right for us. We decided on a laborador retriever. And so, of course, we ended up with a hound/pointer mix, because people don't adopt dogs- dogs adopt people. She gazed at us with those big brown eyes and floppy orange ears and we couldn't walk away.

She has a wonderful temperment- very sweet and friendly but a little timid around new and excitable dogs or loud noises. But whew! Training is no easy task!! When we first got her she jumped like a maniac, mouthed and nipped and knocked things over. She had no house manners, was not potty trained -at all- and would chew up and destroy anything she could get her mouth on. We had to be vigilant. We were obsessive new puppy parents- trying to calm her down and make a decent family member out of the wild beast!

Two months later: She sits, lays down, STAYS for up to 4 minutes!, crawls, shakes, high-fives, waves, heels and is walking better on a leash. She rarely pees in the house. She jumps less, doesn't nip and only thinks about mouthing sometimes. We are still working on "off" and "leave it." She'll fetch the ball and sometimes bring it back but she loves to play soccer. She has given up being destructive- she now chews nicely on her squeaky toys without ripping out their guts. She still wants to play with the cats who do not want to play with her, but we are working on that too. We haven't tackled the digging just yet- we just don't let her stay in the yard too long by herself.

We went to the Dog Park today and she had her fill of doggy-play and is now sleeping soundly in her crate.

I am so fascinated by her- how she learns and behaves and changes... Is this what it's like to have children?

I feel blessed to have her in my life- to experience both the pleasure of her nuzzle as well as the frustration of training her to keep all four feet on the ground.

In any political conflict, it is important not to lose sight of interfaith relationships and the power of knowledge imparted to others through those relationships. People with knowledge can help change the minds of others in a volatile situation. Severing ties during times of conflict will not serve the greater purpose of continuously pursuing knowledge, interfaith cooperation and spiritual/personal growth. Some will decide to stay quiet about current issues so focus on larger goals is not lost. Some will vent feelings, but learn from what is said and done by listening and observing. In the end, all those involved in a conflict, but not necessarily involved directly with the cause of the conflict, who are greatly affected physically, mentally and spiritually will be, I believe, the strongest links in building bridges both in the present and the future. The experiences and reactions of those people are the battle we must face.

Pray that even in the darkest times, the light of love will shine through and be what people see.

Pray that at some point, everyone will stop and think before acting and think about the legacy of any action.

What Can I Do? - Refugee Service Project

There are 22 new refugee families that have not been able to find work since they arrived in the United States. The families no longer qualify for government assistance and now have trouble meeting basic expenses. In Maine, volunteers there have offered to help the refugee families by providing houseing as they continue on the journey towards employment. Atlanta area mosques and organizations are collecting money to help the families relocate.

The cost for relocation is going to be $850 per family or about $19,000. There has been about $5300 collected so far. The community sponsoring the relocation project is hoping to collect enough money in the next two weeks to facilitate the relocation of these families.

If anyone is interested in donating to the relocation project, money can be sent to Masjid Omar Bin Abdul Aziz at 955 Harbins Rd., Lilburn, Georgia 30047. You can also send money to the American Islamic Fellowship at P.O. Box 1034, Smyrna, GA 30082-1034 if you would prefer to donate anonymously.
